Dr. Yaa Fondufe Sakah Lydia Yuvenyonge: Scholar, Strategist, Commissioner.
As March celebrates womanhood, the North West Regional Assembly starts by spotlighting a commissioner whose evidence based leadership is strengthening health systems and advancing social protection.
March is dedicated to celebrating the strength, vision, and impact of women shaping institutions and communities. At the North West Regional Assembly, we begin this tribute by shining the spotlight on Dr. Yaa Fondufe Sakah Lydia Yuvenyonge, Commissioner for Health and Social Development, a leader whose record reflects performance, discipline, and measurable progress.
Born in Nkambe in 1965, Dr. Fondufe built her foundation in academia before transitioning into public service. With a Ph.D. in Geography specializing in natural resource management, she produced research on renewable energy, gender conflicts in resource use, and sustainable water systems. Her academic career spans institutions in Cameroon and the United Kingdom, including lecturing in special needs education in London. She continues to mentor future educators at the Ecole Normale Supérieure Bambili, reinforcing her belief that knowledge must inform governance.
Elected Regional Councilor in 2020 and appointed Commissioner for Health and Social Development, she brought structure and accountability to a critical portfolio. Her leadership strengthened coordination between councils and health districts, improved stakeholder engagement, and prioritized preventive healthcare advocacy across communities. Under her stewardship, the commission expanded collaboration with civil society and women led groups to improve outreach to vulnerable populations, including internally displaced persons, women, and persons with disabilities.
Through systematic monitoring and stronger reporting mechanisms, her office enhanced transparency in health and social programs. Policy discussions within the Assembly increasingly reflect data driven planning, a shift credited to her insistence on aligning research with implementation. Her re election for a second mandate signals institutional trust in her capacity to deliver results.
Beyond the Assembly, Dr. Fondufe has led women’s associations, coordinated environmental initiatives, and represented international foundations. Her recognitions, including the NGONSO Cultural Award and Bui Woman of the Year, affirm sustained community impact.
Fluent in five languages and grounded in service, Dr. Yaa Fondufe Sakah Lydia Yuvenyonge exemplifies leadership that combines intellect with action. As we celebrate women this March, her journey stands as proof that when competence meets commitment, institutions grow stronger and communities move forward.
