Sylvester Moh Tangongho: Key player in Cameroonian public finances

The Director General of the Treasury and Financial and Monetary Cooperation embodies expertise and commitment to the service of public treasury, as evidenced by his career marked by reforms and innovations.

Born with a passion for economics, Sylvester Moh Tangongho earned a master's degree in management from the University of Yaoundé before attending the National School of Administration and Magistracy (ENAM). Upon graduating from this prestigious institution for training senior civil servants in 1989, he was recruited by the Treasury Department, where, shortly after his appointment, he distinguished himself in the "Patriot" project, a flagship initiative aimed at reforming Treasury accounting. This project, designed to optimize public finance management, provided him with the opportunity to demonstrate his management and auditing skills.

His career took a decisive turn when he was appointed auditing inspector in the accounting offices control unit between 1991 and 1994. His career then led him to Bamenda, in the Northwest region, where he was assigned as an authorized representative within the local treasury. This field experience allowed him to gain a better understanding of the economic and financial realities of the country's various regions.

In 1999, he returned to the Treasury Department, where he held various positions of responsibility, notably that of Director of the Accounting Sub-Directorate until 2004. But his rise didn't stop there. In January 2011, he became the Treasury's Chief Accountant, a key position that gave him a comprehensive overview of public finance management. His appointment as Director General of the Treasury and Financial and Monetary Cooperation on February 28, 2013, after serving as interim director following the death of his predecessor, Hamadou Sambo, in October 2011, marked a turning point in his career.

Building on this rich and extensive career, he was simultaneously entrusted by the Head of State with the weighty responsibility of operationalizing the establishment of the Caisse de Dépôts et Consignations (CDEC) as Chairman of the Board of Directors. He also holds several other prestigious positions within community and national institutions.

Renowned for his in-depth knowledge of the workings of public finance, he also distinguishes himself through his commitment to teaching. As a professor at ENAM (National School of Administration and Magistracy), this distinguished son of Cameroon shares his expertise with future generations of civil servants, thus contributing to the training of competent professionals for the public administration.
