*GEN ELOKOBI: A SOLDIER WITH THE VOICE OF A DOVE!*
*By Dr. Ashu Nyenty( Public Affairs Commentator)*
Those who meet Major General Elokobi for the first time are often struck by the contrast between his soft-spoken demeanor and his military background. This contrast highlights that a modern soldier is distinguished more by their intellectual prowess and tactical acumen than by their vocal presence. General Elokobi's persona shines through as a peace advocate extraordinaire, measured, poised, direct, yet unflinching – a far cry from the classical soldier who is often abrasive and summary.
For those who have had the privilege of getting close to him, especially his subordinates at the National Gendarmerie, General Elokobi Daniel Njock's heart is said to be "filled with the milk of human kindness." This may be attributed to his strict Catholic upbringing, which instilled in him the virtues of love, kindness, and peace. Consistently, he has been caught standing on the path of truth, unwavering in his commitment to his values.
*A Heart More than Gold*
I personally witnessed a remarkable example of General Elokobi's kindness and philanthropy when he rallied support for a Cameroonian toddler suffering from a brain tumor. The child was to receive treatment in India, and General Elokobi mobilized his friends to contribute over 3 million francs to cover the costs. Thanks to his efforts, the child received successful treatment. This act of kindness speaks volumes about his character.
*Early Life and Career*
Elokobi Daniel Njock was born on April 15, 1956, in Mamboh, Upper Banyang Sub-Division, Manyu Division, in the South West Region of Cameroon. He attended the Yaoundé Combined Services Military Academy (EMIA) from 1976 to 1979, laying the foundation for his illustrious military career.
*Military Career*
General Elokobi's military journey has been marked by notable milestones. Between 1983 and 1990, he served as the Gendarmerie Company Commander at Tchollire and Garoua. His desire for continuous learning and growth led him to pursue further education. In 1995, he earned a Certificate in Criminal Justice from the University of Virginia (USA) and a Certificate from the FBI Academy – a distinction that made him the only Cameroonian to have achieved this feat at the time. He later attended the Military War College in Paris, France.
*Rise to General*
General Elokobi's ascent to the top echelons of military service was nothing short of meteoric. Between 2004 and 2009, he served as the East Region Legion Commander. In 2009, he was appointed to work at the Employment and Structure Direction (DES/GN) in Yaoundé. On March 11, 2011, the Commander-in-Chief elevated him to the rank of Brigadier General, appointing him Central Director of Coordination at the National Gendarmerie. He was handed his attributes on May 6th of the same year in a ceremony presided over by the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of defense, Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo'o, deputizing for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Paul Biya. As Central Director, General Elokobi coordinated the activities of all Gendarmerie units across the country, playing a pivotal role in military intelligence and combating criminality.
One particular instance that stands out is when I was returning from a trip in Douala, and General Elokobi reached out to me on the phone. I mentioned I would get back to him later, but he simply stated that he was aware of my trip, despite me not having discussed it with him. This anecdote showcases his exceptional intelligence gathering capabilities.
On July 15, 2025, the Commander-in-Chief further elevated General Elokobi to the rank of Major General, appointing him Inspector General of the National Gendarmerie – a testament to his unwavering dedication and service.
*Challenges*
Despite his remarkable career, General Elokobi has faced numerous challenges. As a high-ranking military officer, he has had to navigate complex situations, often finding himself at the crossroads of loyalty to his country and personal relationships. Many times, he has faced tough choices, prioritizing his duty to the Republic over personal affections. His family, both at home and abroad, has often suffered due to his commitment to serving the nation with honor and fidelity. Yet, General Elokobi has weathered every storm, demonstrating stoicism and unwavering resolve.
*Awards and Recognition*
Throughout his distinguished career, General Elokobi has received numerous foreign and national decorations from the Head of State, recognizing his meritorious services. Despite his rise to the pinnacle of military service, he remains an affable and affectionate family man, deeply rooted in African values. His attachment to his ancestral roots and the Manyu people has never been questioned, and he is a flagship member of the Manyu kindred association in Yaounde.
