BAMENDA WASTE PLANT PROJECT GAINS MOMENTUM AS FEASIBILITY STUDIES SET TO BEGIN

There is renewed hope for waste management in Bamenda as feasibility studies for the proposed Bamenda Waste Management Plant are expected to begin within the next three weeks. This followed a stakeholders' meeting held this Saturday, August 8, at the Bamenda II Conference Hall, where municipal authorities, development partners, and technical experts converged to chart the way forward for the multi-billion-franc project. Estimated at 500 million U.S. dollars, equivalent to about 300 billion CFA francs, the project is expected to provide a lasting response to the city's perennial waste management challenges by transforming waste into industrial products, including energy, thereby turning a mounting environmental crisis into a sustainable economic opportunity.
The stakeholders' meeting, which brought together key actors in the waste management sector, focused on laying the groundwork for the feasibility studies that will assess the technical, environmental, and financial viability of the project. Speaking at the meeting, Chenwi Peter, Mayor of the Bamenda II Council and Focal Point of the project in Cameroon, expressed optimism about the initiative, emphasizing its transformative potential for the city and its surroundings. "This project is not just about waste collection; it is about creating a circular economy where waste becomes a resource. We are committed to seeing this through for the benefit of our people," Mayor Chenwi stated, underscoring the crucial role local authorities are playing in driving the project forward.
Once operational, the Bamenda Waste Management Plant is expected to revolutionize waste disposal in the city by converting waste into usable industrial products, including energy, while also creating jobs and reducing environmental pollution. Mayor Chenwi called on all stakeholders to remain engaged and supportive as the feasibility studies commence, assuring the population that the project remains a top priority for the Bamenda II Council. The coming weeks are therefore critical as technical teams prepare to descend on the city to begin the assessment that will determine the next phase of this ambitious initiative, which promises to position Bamenda as a model for sustainable waste management in Cameroon.
